CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Project Update: Week of August 17 - 23, 2008

During the week of August 17th, construction crews will begin excavating for retaining and sound walls between the northbound Hwy 101 on-ramp at Cabrillo Boulevard and northbound Hwy 101 off-ramp at Salinas Street.  Work will occur behind concrete safety barrier.  In the upcoming weeks, excavation work will continue near the southbound Hwy 101 bridge over Milpas Street.

The northbound Highway 101 off-ramp at Salinas Street will be temporarily closed on Tuesday night (August 19, 2008) between 8:30pm and 6:30am for utility work.

Throughout the week, temporary lane and ramp closures may occur between 9pm and 7am on southbound Highway 101 between Milpas Street and Hot Springs Road to re-stripe lanes as needed.

Throughout construction the freeway will remain open, and Highway 101 will have 2 lanes open in each direction during daytime hours.

A Look Ahead:
Depending on work in the area, the southbound Hwy 101 off-ramp at Los Patos Way (by the bird refuge) will be closed for 12 months as early as the week after next (week of August 24th).  During the temporary closure, drivers can use the southbound Hwy 101 off-ramp at Hot Springs Road.

The southbound Hwy 101 on-ramp at Milpas Street will remain open during the week.  Next week, we will provide more information about the upcoming temporary closure.  During the temporary closure, a signed detour will direct traffic to use the southbound Hwy 101 on-ramp at Garden Street.

Additional information regarding upcoming temporary closures is available at www.SBroads.com on the Detours page.

Rideshare Incentives:
SBCAG and the project team are encouraging drivers to reduce single-occupant vehicle trips during construction with the Curb Your Commute program.  Curb Your Commute with incentives and resources to help you reduce your time on the road and improve your quality of life.  Traffic Solutions is offering carpool matching, enhanced bus service, commuter cash incentives, free vanpooling and employer assistance.  Visit the rideshare page on www.SBroads.com.

Project Information:

The Highway 101 Operational Improvements between Milpas and Hot Springs include the reconstruction of two major interchanges, six new or improved bridges, freeway widening, and improvements to local streets and pedestrian pathways. The $53 million construction and landscaping project is funded by Proposition 1B and $13 million Measure D dollars.

Construction is anticipated to take 4 years. The majority of construction will occur behind concrete barriers during daytime work hours; some nighttime lane closures will occur.  Motorists should expect an estimated 10 minutes of added travel time in each direction.

Public outreach has been ongoing for the last three years to provide residents and businesses with project planning information in advance of construction.

Additional Construction Information:  New Montecito Roundabout
The Hwy 101 Improvements between Milpas and Hot Springs include a new Montecito roundabout at the intersections of Hot Springs Road, Old Coast Highway, Coast Village Road, and Cabrillo Boulevard.  An aerial rendering of the new roundabout is below.  To learn more about driving in roundabouts, please see links below the roundabout graphic.
