CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
Timeframe: September 13 - September 26, 2026

Spotlight: Over the coming weeks in Montecito, crews will prepare southbound Highway 101 for the next stages of work as construction progresses toward opening the new carpool lane. This will include pavement grinding, anticipated to begin later this month and continue into October. This nighttime work will generate noticeable construction noise, and additional details will be provided as the work approaches. In Santa Barbara South, construction will continue on permanent roadway improvements in the freeway median, including nighttime concrete pouring. This work will result in the nighttime lane closures listed below, so please plan accordingly and allow extra time when traveling through the area. In Padaro, the concrete mix site will operate overnight from Sept. 13 through Sept. 25 to support the placement of new continuously reinforced concrete pavement in the Montecito segment; please expect night noise.

Closures (weather permitting)

Please drive safely through the corridor and remember to Slow for the Cone Zone. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph for safety throughout the construction area.

  • Northbound Highway 101
    • 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sun., Sept. 13-Mon., Sept. 14 overnight lane closures on Highway 101 between Evans Avenue at the Highway 101 overpass and Hermosillo Road for paving operations. During this time, traffic will be reduced to one lane.
    • 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Mon., Sept. 14-Fri., Sept. 18 overnight lane closures on Highway 101 between Evans Avenue at the Highway 101 overpass and Hermosillo Road for paving operations. During this time, traffic will be reduced to one lane.
    • 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sun., Sept. 20-Mon., Sept. 21 overnight lane closures on Highway 101 between Evans Avenue at the Highway 101 overpass and Hermosillo Road for paving operations. During this time, traffic will be reduced to one lane.
    • 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Mon., Sept. 21-Fri., Sept. 25 overnight lane closures on Highway 101 between Evans Avenue at the Highway 101 overpass and Hermosillo Road for paving operations. During this time, traffic will be reduced to one lane.
    • Off-ramp at Cabrillo Blvd, closed until summer 2028. Drivers can use the off-ramp at Hermosillo Rd.

  • Southbound Highway 101
    • 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sun., Sept. 13-Mon., Sept. 14 overnight lane closures on Highway 101 between Milpas Street and Olive Mill Road. During this time, traffic will be reduced to one lane.
    • 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Mon., Sept. 14-Fri., Sept. 18 overnight lane closures on Highway 101 between Milpas Street and Olive Mill Road. During this time, traffic will be reduced to one lane.
    • 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sun., Sept. 20-Mon., Sept. 21 overnight lane closures on Highway 101 between Milpas Street and Olive Mill Road. During this time, traffic will be reduced to one lane.
    • 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Mon., Sept. 21-Fri., Sept. 25 overnight lane closures on Highway 101 between Milpas Street and Olive Mill Road. During this time, traffic will be reduced to one lane.
    • Off-ramp at Cabrillo Blvd, closed until summer 2028. Drivers can use the off-ramp at Spring/Olive Mill Road as a detour.

  • Cabrillo Blvd under Hwy 101
    • Flaggers will intermittently direct daytime one-way traffic beneath Highway 101 for equipment and material deliveries. Expect short delays.
  • S. Jameson Lane
    • Flaggers will direct traffic on S. Jameson Lane as needed for safety barrier work.

Please note: Closure times may be subject to adjustment if needed due to equipment breakdowns, material compliance or delivery delays, or safety concerns during the shift. Consecutive ramps in the same direction will not be closed at the same time (unless noted) to allow drivers to use a ramp before or after a closure.

Highway 101: Santa Barbara North

The Santa Barbara North segment is located between Hermosillo Rd and Salinas St.


  • Highway 101 and On-and Off-Ramps at Cabrillo Boulevard Interchange
    • Crews are continuing drainage installation in the median and grading the area in preparation for upcoming roadway work.
    • Residents and businesses may notice increased daytime construction noise from foundation drilling and retaining wall work.
  • Cabrillo Blvd under Hwy 101
    • Foundation drilling work is ongoing, while crews continue forming and pouring concrete for the bridge columns and constructing the retaining wall.
    • Flaggers will intermittently direct daytime one-way traffic beneath Highway 101 for equipment and material deliveries. Expect short delays.

Highway 101: Santa Barbara South

The Santa Barbara South segment is located between Olive Mill and Hermosillo Rds.


  • Highway 101 and Southbound Off-Ramp at Spring/Olive Mill Rd
    • Construction will continue on permanent roadway improvements in the freeway median, including nighttime concrete pouring (see photo above).
    • Temporary lane closures will be in place to support concrete pouring operations and allow concrete trucks to safely access the median work area. See the closure information above for specific dates, times and locations.
Montecito Median Work

Highway 101: Montecito

The Montecito segment is located between Sheffield Dr and Olive Mill Rd.

  • Highway 101
    • Work on the permanent concrete median barrier between Olive Mill Rd. and San Ysidro Rd. is progressing (see photo above), with crews beginning installation of median guardrail barriers.

Highway 101: Padaro

The Padaro segment is located between S Padaro/Santa Claus Ln and N Padaro Ln. Improvements are built and in use for the Padaro segment.

  • Concrete Mix Site at N Padaro Interchange
    • 6 p.m. to 7 a.m., Sun., Sept. 13-Fri., Sept. 25 The concrete mix site will operate overnight to support placement of new continuously reinforced concrete pavement in the Santa Barbara segment. Please expect night noise.
    • By mixing concrete on-site, the project saves an estimated 463,771 truck miles, reduces water use by 400,000 gallons (on-site mixing uses less water), and saves taxpayers between $10-$15 million.
  • Concrete Recycling Continues by the Northbound Highway 101 Off-Ramp at N. Padaro Ln.

Highway 101: Carpinteria to Santa Barbara is a project undertaken by Caltrans and SBCAG in cooperation with local agencies to add a new carpool lane in each direction between Carpinteria and Santa Barbara. The project will improve bridges, interchanges, on- and off-ramps, and add sound walls.
